Even casual fans are well aware of the returning senior core from last year’s 22-11 team, including the reigning Big West Conference Player of the Year Casper Ware. But the addition of Ennis, freshman point guard Mike Caffey and others will have fans day-dreaming of a visit to the NCAA Tournament in no time.
The fans aren’t the only ones with high expectations for Long Beach State this season. Coaches in the Big West Conference recently tabbed the 49ers No. 1 in the annual preseason poll, ahead of UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Fullerton. They also named three Long Beach seniors (Ware, Larry Anderson and T.J. Robinson) to the six-man preseason All-Conference Team.
After consecutive trips to the Big West Tournament Championship game that both ended in losses to Santa Barbara, those 49ers from the heralded 2008 recruiting class – along with Eugene Phelps – are hungry to finish their four-year careers on a high note.
It could lead to impressive crowds in the Walter Pyramid this season. Long Beach led the conference in average attendance last year, and the home opener against San Diego State drew the largest crowd in Pyramid history. Thanks to the hype surrounding the 49ers’ championship hopes, the athletic department is expecting an even bigger fan presence in 2011-12. Rivalry games against Santa Barbara and Fullerton will be at home while students are still in session, and administrators may have scored a major coup in fan enthusiasm by making “Clipper Darrell” an honorary 49er fan.
